SHAUN KARDINAL | PRESENT TENSE

SHAUN KARDINAL

PRESENT TENSE
JAN 4 - FEB 15, 2020

OPENING RECEPTION
January 4, 2020 - 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Present Tense is an exhibition of new embroidery work on paper by artist Shaun Kardinal, on view on January 4 – February 15, 2020. Opening Reception, Saturday January 4, 2020 from 3-6 p.m.

In Present Tense, Kardinal explores space, time, and the climate crisis with a new series of embroidered paper collages. Charting geometric paths across beatific landscapes, revealing connections between spaces, the artist reminds viewers of the relationships between everything that surrounds us. Made of found scenes from the past to explore this immediate present, works in the exhibition consider the change which has already befallen the places imaged, and asks viewers to consider the repercussions of our actions yet to come. A portion of the proceeds from all sales will be donated to The Sierra Club Foundation, funding climate solutions and conservation.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a digital catalog will be published with an essay by writer and curator, Sharon Arnold.

  • Time does not exist.

There are only events, perceived ever unfolding — impact points of action, rippling reaction.

At the seams of those currents are forces of unknown origin and unquantifiable measure. Beheld only in stillness, those who have seen glean meaning: messages hidden in plain sight.

In synchronicity and pattern, charting paths across beatific landscapes, this work visualizes that pause, where cascading planes reveal connections, and the intertwined dimensions into which we may slip. Existing in multiple states, each piece explores two or more vantages of a moment, interconnected, apart.

  • Shaun Kardinal is a Seattle-based conceptual artist, curator and collaborator. His cross-disciplinary art practice manifests as altered objects, modular structures, collaborative exhibition platforms and interactive physical-digital installations. He is the recipient of two 4Culture Grants and a 2019 GAP grant recipient from Artist Trust that will help fund this exhibition.
