Portrait of the artist in her studio, painting at an easel

MAGGIE JIANG

  • Seattle-based visual artist, Maggie Jiang, was born in Beijing and educated in both China and the U.S. Jiang creates abstract paintings that investigate the enigmatic qualities of geometry, the interactions of color, and the materiality of paint.

Jiang has been exhibiting regularly since 2016 and has participated in exhibitions at the Schack Art Center, Everett, WA, and The Asian Pacific Cultural Center, Tacoma, WA.

Her work has been featured in “the Seattle Times”, “the Stranger”, “the International Examiner”, “Now Be Here Art”, “Visual Art Source” and other publications.

Jiang’s work can be found in various private collections throughout the U.S.

  • Drawing influences from De Stijl, Bauhaus, and Concrete Art, I make abstract paintings that investigate the enigmatic qualities of geometry, the interactions of color, and the materiality of paint. I build up my paintings slowly with many layers of shapes, lines, and texture, through a process of careful deliberation and instinctual spontaneity.

Leaning into my Chinese American cultural heritage, I incorporate the visual vocabulary from the I-Ching (also known as the “the Book of Changes”) and the geometry from the Tangram puzzle into my work. The work functions as a testament for abstract painting’s capacity to communicate universal and transcendental human experience. It exists to inspire the curiosity and introspection that are inherent in non-objective painting.
