Jan Hoy was raised in the Puget Sound area and it is where she calls home. Hoy received her BFA from the University of Washington.

Jan Hoy's work lies in the realm of abstraction. Using water based clay, bronze, and stainless steel Jan configures her sculptures to move in a continuous curving motion. Rooted in curvilinear abstraction, these parameters give these sculptures a hefty and yet graceful appearance.

Her work is featured in the Sutter Hill Cathedral Hospital, San Francisco, CA, downtown Seattle, Lake Oswego, OR, La Conner, WA, and the new veterans home in Walla Walla, WA.

Jan’s sculptures are in the collections of the Museum of NW Art, La Conner, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

The “Lock Series” are a group of abstract sculptures based on an 8” square that moves in a continuous curving motion. Each side maintains an 8” distance from the opposite side as it curves. These parameters give these sculptures a hefty and yet graceful look. The original pieces were created in clay and finished with iron oxide. From the original group several pieces were selected to be fabricated in bronze.

For this series “Unlock” and “Hover Lock”, are fabricated in bronze. “Unlock” has a sense of opening up or unfolding, where “Hover Lock” has two identical sides, with one turned upside down to the other. It “hovers” above a stainless steel base. “Crescent Lock”, curves around in a circle to twist outward and never meet at the top. This piece is clay with an iron oxide finish. The finish is painted on the fired clay sculpture, a two step process. An underlayment of material with iron particles is first painted over the surface. A second material is then painted over this to react with the iron and create a permanent rust finish.
